About Us

When the Toronto Zoo first opened its doors in 1974 it was hailed as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking zoos in the world. It didn’t take 40 years for the Toronto Zoo to reach this point, such status was anticipated from the very beginning.

At the time the Zoo opened, our planet lost one or two species per year, and now almost 40 years later, sadly the global extinction rate has soared to three species lost per day. That is why the Toronto Zoo is here. For almost four decades, millions of adults and children have visited the Toronto Zoo and have seen firsthand the work that is done here. Today, with the support of our more than 30,000 members, the Toronto Zoo remains a global leader in species protection at home and abroad. The Toronto Zoo is much more than just a place to see beautiful, exotic and endangered species. It is a place where animal health, reproduction and species protection are advanced. It is also an experiential school for wildlife preservation the likes of which has never been seen before in Canada. Extinct is forever and the role of accredited zoos is critical to the ongoing survival of thousands of species.

Learning comes naturally at the Toronto Zoo!

The Toronto Zoo provides the perfect setting for individuals of all ages to explore the natural world first hand, including plants and animals from around the world they may not otherwise get an opportunity to experience in the wild. Such opportunities help connect people with nature, establishing a bond that creates an unparalleled opportunity to foster conservation through education.

Conservation Education Mission:

Toronto Zoo will engage communities by providing the tools and knowledge to connect to nature and protect our natural world.
